Lepers were excluded from society and so he could not get a piece of land close by. Dr. McCain, another missionary, had successfully done a similar work in Chiang Mai, thanks to a service he had done to the Prince of Chiang Mai unwittingly. The McDaniels simply followed the model of Dr. McCain. Kenneth tells how one day he was coming back home from church when he noticed Peggy laying in front of the house, with a king cobra rearing up, getting ready to strike. Kenneth let out a war whoop and started swinging a cane and yelling at the cobra. The snake took off fast like an express train. Margaret explains how deadly a king cobra's bite is and tells a story about a missionary saving a woman's life from a king cobra. The lepers got a heavy box and forked sticks and coordinated their action to take the snake by surprise and force it into the box. They succeeded and brought it to the Chinese medicine man who bought it. He lived to be 96 after a very successful career. His son Phya Ratsida was more interesting for Margaret (Margaret and Kenneth pause to talk about Thai courtesy and forms of greetings; she got to talk with country women and learn a great deal of the culture; Kenneth tells a story about building the freedom highway). The old country women who came to see Margaret would always go back to the old governor, Phya Ratsida, and what he did for the region. He could have been seen as a dictator, or feudal, but he did lead the area to prosperity.
