Kenneth explains the rainy season process and the crop seasons it gave for different areas in the peninsula. Some regions had three crop seasons while others had two. A monsoon rain would hit very suddenly and violently. One moment you were dry and the next you were soaked, and there was "no-inbetween" They sound was awe-inspiring, and it was especially dreadful in the jungle. Kenneth and Margaret describe the fascinating process of moving the boat to sea. It was used to carry the tin, and several people with different expertise were working on the dredge, with the help of many coolies. Mr. Sheehan was one of the winchmen. A pickel of tin was a little bag of tin about the size of a twelve-pound flour sack, but it was almost worth its weight in gold. Kenneth recalls war stories associated with the area and tells of his visit to one particular island. It was eerie. He tells of his long visit inside the cave, how he got stuck at a dead end on his way out, and spared himself another twelve hours of walking by taking a huge risk of jumping down to where he needed to go. He took many pictures of the cave, especially the cathedral inside. He tells of the US soldiers hiding in this cave during WWII and being perfectly safe from the Japanese. Kenneth had told the OSS about this cave. It was Peggy's first Christmas, and presents came from the U.S. Even though Adelle and the girls had very little money, they always found ways of sending gifts. She tells of the customs and how the Siamese adopted foreign things they liked and reject those they did not like. She recalls Christmas celebration and the differences in culture and the many simply, yet lovely things they enjoyed, especially from home. Margaret describes also the house they lived in and how she received guests at Christmas, and the ants that literally covered the Christmas tree and the presents. The Landons were careful about the ants in the house because there were so many of them, so much so that they called their home the "bug house." Kenneth tells about a solid phalanx of ants that would always walk through the house no matter what the Landons did. He was a very powerful and highly respected person, not only by the Thai but also by all the foreigners living in Bangkok. He was the premier prince. They tell of the coup d'etat that led the Prince to exile. Prince Damrong wrote a letter to Dr. McDaniel from his exile, and Dr. McDaniel was the one who introduced Margaret to Anna's books and the royal family. The Prince was instrumental in the success of several missionaries' work, including the leper asylum that Dr. McDaniel started. Kenneth called on him and showed him the listing of all these books he had for the university if they were interested. Metcalf declined the offer. When the war broke out, Dr. Metcalf was lamenting the fact that Harvard did not have a library on Southeast Asia to support courses.
