Sihanouk knew that Kenneth didn't speak French too well, so he arranged for Kenneth to sit at the dinner table away from his interpreter, thus making it impossible for him to get any help. But Kenneth used a technique to overcome the obstacle, and the king was surprised and just kept laughing. The group went to a theatre after dinner and returned an hour later. The two men spoke in Thai, using the common language. The King gave a dinner, and his wife came. He had told Kenneth that she never came to dinners for foreign diplomats because she didn't speak any language but Lao. But when she learned that Kenneth spoke Thai, she decided to come. So the King, his wife, Kenneth, and a few of the courtiers had an enjoyable evening together. He said hello, and she said, "Kenneth! Where are you?" He said, "Djakarta." And she said, "Oh, where in Kansas are you?" He explained, and she could hardly believe it. He sounded as if he were so near by. But it was just an excellent connection by cable all the way round the world, left by the Dutch. Kenneth was the desk officer for all these areas of Southeast Asia, so here was Ken Landon from the Department of State visiting the new nation of Indonesia. The rate of exchange on the black market was incredible, but the official rate of exchange impossible. The ambassador insisted that all Americans exchange their money on the official rate of exchange. Cochran had a Marine colonel with a two-engine Beechcraft, and a co-pilot, six feet four tall or more, and Kenneth toured Java. They flew over to a volcano, the highest mountain on the island. The plane ran out of gas and started going down, but the co-pilot managed to get gas flowing from another tank. Kenneth took pictures of the mountain but passed out momentarily as the plane was suddenly thrown up into the sky when they got too close to the hot air of the volcano. All the women were bare from the waist up. The woman would come around, and she had great big bosoms, and she would lean down and stick them right in front of people's faces, and then she'd begin to serve. It was a rather unnerving experience to one not accustomed to it. Kenneth was convinced that there would be a change. The two men argued about it. When Kenneth boarded the plane the next day, Merle Cochran's DCM, Jake Beam, was flying with him, to persuade him not to give a report that would contradict Cochran's, but Kenneth maintained that he would report what he had seen. The plane hit the monsoon wind and reached a point that it could not go forward, and had to fly sideways over the edge of Sumatra and land on its belly, without wheels, in a paddy field. He was being charged with a traffic violation and defecating in public. However there was a double charge for both defecating and urinating. The man argued that it was impossible to defecate without urinating, and therefore there should only be a single charge for the incident. Upon sending these reports to Gordon Gray, the National Security advisor to President Eisenhower, the stories were immediately relayed to the President himself! Over a course of 13 years Kip Landon (Kenneth Landon Jr.) began recording stories from his parents, Margaret and Kenneth Landon, resulting in 95 hours of recordings. Beginning on July 20, 1976, recording finished in June, 1978. The project resumed again in 1982 for a few months. After a long break, the third recording period began in 1988 and concluded in March 1989.
