When she went to Siam with Kenneth in 1927 she had to send for her birth certificate. It was then that she discovered that it read "Female Mortenson." Adelle had to go to the Wheaton courthouse and swear out an affidavit asserting that Margaret was who she said she was. Eakin was just beginning his time in Siam, but he managed to have a speech written in perfect Siamese. At the banquet he read the speech upon the insistance of the king. The king and all the people were amazed. Then the king said a few words in English, to which Eakin replied "Mai paw" (not enough!), a phrase he wasn't supposed to say in front of the King. She also tells of Ah Chuan's whooping cough and the medicine he drank all at once, claiming the next morning that he was completely healed and could work again (in fact he could not cough simply because of the overdose). First the foreign New Year on January 1, then the Chinese New Year in February, and finally the Indian New Year celebration in March. The Indians had a grand time with their celebration. It lasted two days, and the Landons' watchman was gone for three days, needing an extra day to recover from the celebration.
